Issue Development

After publication, the article was copied by hundreds of low-quality websites, resulting in a massive surge of backlinks to the original site. Googlebot detected this sudden increase in backlinks, particularly noting the high density of links in a single paragraph, a common characteristic in black hat SEO practices. The nature of these links, along with their repetitive and money-focused anchor text, made it appear as if the website was engaging in artificial link-building schemes.

Google’s Reaction

Google’s algorithms are designed to identify and penalize websites that appear to employ manipulative link-building practices. In this case, the website was penalized for what Google’s algorithm perceived as an attempt to artificially boost its rankings through spammy backlinks. The penalty resulted in a substantial drop in the website’s keyword rankings, adversely affecting its visibility and organic traffic.

Analysis

The high concentration of links in a single paragraph and the use of money keywords as anchor text contributed significantly to the perception of artificial link manipulation. The widespread replication of the article by low-quality sites exacerbated the issue, creating a link profile that raised red flags for Google’s spam detection algorithms.

Resolution Steps

We conducted a thorough audit to identify all the spammy backlinks then utilised Google’s Disavow Tool to disassociate their site from these harmful links. Efforts were also made to reach out to legitimate news sites that had copied the article, requesting the removal of the content or links. Finally, the marketer in charged of the website was advised revise the content strategy to avoid high link densities in future publications and focused on building natural, high-quality backlinks.

Outcome

After taking corrective measures and submitting a reconsideration request to Google, the website gradually recovered its rankings. Though it should be noted that this required several rounds of disavow lists submitted as each time a bunch of new low quality sites copied the content, the rankings dropped gain.

This recovery process was accompanied by an increased focus on adhering to SEO best practices, particularly in the realm of link building and content distribution.

Secondly, we utilised Google Search Console’s temporary removal tool to expeditiously remove these pages from Google’s search results. All in all, we undertook a rigorous process lasting about six weeks, dedicated to continuously identifying and removing such pages.

After approximately two months of diligent effort and continuous monitoring, the website’s rankings began to recover. Case Study 3: Invisible Text Injection in a Hacked Website

Situation Overview

A client’s website fell victim to a hacking incident where “invisible” text was injected into the <head> section of all pages. This hidden text contained adult terms and links to adult websites, a serious issue that could severely impact the site’s SEO and credibility.

Issue Development

The problem came to light during a routine crawl of the site using Screaming Frog. This revealed a sudden influx of suspicious external links that were previously not present.

Discovery

Further investigation into the website’s code led to the discovery of these outbound links in the <head> section. The text, cleverly hidden using white text on a white background, was made visible by highlighting the background of this section, revealing the adult content.

Resolution Steps

The immediate step was to remove the malicious code from the website, eliminating the hidden text and links. We then engaged a professional website security company to thoroughly inspect the site and identify the vulnerability that had been exploited in the attack. This step was crucial to prevent future security breaches.

Outcome

A week following the removal of the code and the security overhaul, the website’s rankings began to recover. This case highlights the importance of regular website audits and the need for robust security measures. Situation Overview

Google’s algorithm update changed the type of content deemed relevant for the search term. This shift indicated a new focus on educational and informational content rather than commercial listings.

Analysis

Upon analyzing the new SERP layout, it became clear that Google now prioritized content offering in-depth knowledge about TCM in Singapore over e-commerce platforms.

Resolution Steps

I advised the client on the nature of the SERP change and its implications. With their understanding, we developed a new content strategy that aligned with Google’s revised interpretation of the keyword. Subsequently, we created a comprehensive article introducing TCM, covering its origins, practices, and various aspects, to provide the depth and breadth of information now favored by Google.

Outcome

Case Study 5: Schema With Old Date

A perplexing ranking drop was observed in several pages of a website, with no apparent commonality in content topics. These pages experienced a significant decrease in Google rankings, plummeting by more than 30 positions.

Issue Development

The affected pages displayed no overt issues upon initial checks, which included content review and standard SEO analysis. The mystery deepened until a crucial clue was discovered during a ‘site:’ search on Google.

Discovery

Google’s search results were incorrectly dating these pages to the year 2013, despite them being published in 2021. This incorrect date was leading to a misrepresentation of the content’s freshness and relevance.

Analysis

A thorough examination of the site’s code revealed the source of the error: the video schema on the affected pages had the wrong year listed – 2013. This incorrect date in the schema was misleading Google’s understanding of the content’s recency.

Resolution Steps

I promptly corrected the year in the video schema on the affected pages to reflect the accurate publication date, 2021. Additionally, we conducted an experimental change in date to 1999 on certain pages, which interestingly led to an even more significant drop in rankings.

Outcome

A week after correcting the date in the schema, the rankings of the affected pages began to recover, reaffirming the importance of accurate metadata. The experiment with the 1999 date provided additional insights, emphasising the critical role of pattern recognition and attention to detail in SEO. 

This case study highlights the often-overlooked impact of metadata accuracy on search rankings and the need for continual vigilance in monitoring all aspects of a website’s SEO health.

Case Study 6: Restoring Google Discovery Traffic Through Enhanced E-A-T

Situation Overview

A content-focused website heavily dependent on Google Discover for traffic experienced an abrupt disappearance from the platform, leading to a significant drop in visitor numbers. This sudden change posed a critical challenge to the site’s visibility and audience reach.

Issue Development

The website’s reliance on Google Discover for traffic made its sudden exclusion from the platform particularly impactful. The drop in traffic was sharp and immediate, necessitating an urgent analysis and solution.

Discovery and Analysis

A deep dive into the website’s content revealed a key oversight: the absence of author bylines on the article pages. Author attribution is a vital component of Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness (E-A-T), which Google heavily factors into content ranking and visibility, particularly in Google Discover.

Resolution Steps

I firstly collaborated with the client to develop author profiles for the website. This included implementing changes to ensure that each article page listed its respective author, linking back to their full profile.

Additionally, we enhanced the author profile pages with ‘Person’ schema markup and linked them to the authors’ respective social media profiles. This step added an extra layer of credibility and depth to the authors’ online presence.

Outcome

Approximately one month after these changes were implemented, the website observed a restoration of its traffic levels from Google Discover. The addition of author bylines and profiles effectively boosted the site’s E-A-T, aligning it with Google’s content quality requirements for Discover. This case study underscores the importance of E-A-T in content strategy, especially for platforms like Google Discover, and highlights the effectiveness of quick, targeted SEO adjustments in recovering and enhancing online visibility.

Case Study 7: Resolving Google’s Incorrect Understanding Of A Product’s Price

Situation Overview
Our client, an ecommerce retailer of high-end electronic products, faced a perplexing issue. Despite having accurate prices on their product pages, Google Search was displaying an erroneous, extremely low price in the search snippet. This misrepresented pricing led to significant distrust among searchers, resulting in a poor click-through rate (CTR) and subsequently a drop in the page’s rankings.

Issue Development
The inaccurate price snippet persisted despite multiple attempts to correct it. Initial steps included deindexing and reindexing the affected pages, but the incorrect price continued to appear in Google’s search results. This problem was not isolated to a single page but was prevalent across several pages in the site’s various country subfolders, although not all pages were affected.

Discovery
To identify the root cause, we conducted a comparative analysis between the pages displaying the incorrect price and those without the issue. We discovered that the problematic pages had a less clear pricing field, which was not being rendered correctly by Googlebot. Using Google’s Rich Results Test tool, we observed that Googlebot failed to render the price field on these pages entirely.

Analysis
The analysis revealed a critical clue: the product page URLs contained a product ID, which included a combination of numbers and alphabetical letters. Further investigation showed that the alphabetical letters corresponded to a specific currency. When we converted the product ID numbers and this currency into a price, it matched the incorrect price shown in the search snippet. This indicated that Google was using this unintended proxy to guess the product’s price due to the unclear pricing information on the page.

Resolution Steps
With a clear understanding of the problem, we took the following steps:

  • Code Adjustment: We adjusted the pricing field in the HTML code to make it clearer and more accessible to Googlebot.
  • Rich Results Optimisation: Ensured that all product pages had clearly defined and easily readable price fields, following Google’s guidelines for rich snippets.
  • Reindexing: Submitted the corrected pages for reindexing in Google Search Console to ensure that the changes were picked up promptly by Google.

Outcome
After implementing these changes, the correct prices began to display in Google’s search snippets. This correction led to an immediate improvement in user trust and a subsequent increase in the CTR. Over time, the improved user interaction metrics contributed to a recovery and gradual improvement in the page rankings. This case highlights the importance of clear and precise information for Googlebot and demonstrates how small technical adjustments can have a significant impact on search performance.

Case Study 8: Link Penalty Due To Artificial Anchor Text

Situation Overview

This one hurt as it occured on our very own firstpagedigital.sg website. Our own website got hit with a link penalty from the August 2025 spam update. What is interesting here is that we had not engage in linkbuilding in the past 2 years. But several years ago, we had links built with exact match money anchor text which of course was highly artificial. We had since stop that for at least 2 years as we were keen to create a more sustainable SEO effort. Nonetheless, when the spam update rolled out, Google did not care for when these overly artificial links were built, and thus penalised us.

Issue Development

When i say penalise, I would describe it as a 3 stage drastic rank drop. Over 3 distinct periods following the update, our SEO rankings dropped from position 1 to off page 1, then to page 3, before dropping off the SERP altogether. This basically cost us half of our website’s organic traffic and many of which were high potential traffic in terms of lead gen. As such, it was critical that we worked to resolve this.

Discovery and Analysis

Due to the timing of the drop, we had already suspected a link penalty. We confirmed this by making many changes onpage and ensuring that all content was indexed. Yet no matter how much resources we sunk in for on-page, content, internal link optimisation, E-A-T boosting, rich media usage, and more, the rankings never recovered. As such, we confirmed within 2 months that a full link penalty was in effect.

Resolution Steps

Ironically, given that we had a link penalty due to the overly optimised link profile that we had inherited, we had to re-engage in more linkbuilding. Except, of course, this time we had to do it proper. The way I think about linkbuilding is that most keyword rich anchor text don’t really make sense. No one would write an article and link using such words. As such, we solely engaged in linkbuilding using our brand name as anchor text. Additionally, we carefully picked what websites to outreach to, and offered to create content that would (A) rank and get traffic, and (B) would be targeted at that website’s actual audience. In turn, we requested that when it came to a section dedicated to SEO, that First Page Digital be mentioned and linked.

Outcome

To be honest, recovery was anything but fast. It took us no less than 4 months to earn back some basic level of trust from Google. At this mark, we saw that our rankings would fluctuate wildly, almost like a website on its honeymoon phase. Google seemed to be testing our website again with audiences and seeing if it was worthy. 

My advice? Trying to game the algorithm with quantity and exact match anchor text is too much of a risk no matter how quick the results are at the start. Stick to proper and natural marketing in SEO and you will be way better off.

Did Your Google Rankings Actually Drop?

If you have just opened Google Search Console and seen a sharp decline in rankings, or watched your organic traffic fall with no obvious explanation, I understand exactly how that feels. In over 600 SEO campaigns across Singapore and the region, I have diagnosed dozens of ranking drops for clients, and the first thing I always do is slow down before jumping to conclusions.

Before we start the diagnostic process, it is worth separating two things that are often confused. A drop in position means your page has moved further down the rankings for a target keyword. A drop in traffic can happen even if your position has not changed, because new SERP features like featured snippets, video carousels, People Also Ask boxes, or AI Overviews have appeared above your result and taken clicks that previously came to you. Both feel the same from the outside but require completely different responses. This guide helps you diagnose both.

What follows is a seven-step diagnostic checklist I have built from real campaign experience and peer-reviewed against what the industry’s most reliable research tells us about how Google evaluates and re-evaluates pages. Work through the steps in order. The most common causes appear early in the list. Do not start making changes until you have completed enough of the process to understand what actually happened.

Step 1: Determine What Dropped, When, and How Much?

Before any other diagnostic work, you need to understand the shape of the problem. Acting without this picture is how SEOs make things worse, you fix the wrong thing and now you have two problems instead of one.

Work through these nine questions using Google Search Console’s Performance report and any rank-tracking tools you have access to:

  • What is the magnitude of the drop? Are you looking at a 10% decline or an 80% decline? Small drops suggest algorithm volatility or minor on-site changes. Large, sudden drops suggest a more significant cause.
  • Which pages are affected? Is it one URL, a section of the site, or the entire domain? A single page dropping points to page-level issues. A section dropping points to category or template-level issues. The entire site dropping points to domain-level causes (penalty, algorithm update, or major technical problem).
  • Which keyword clusters are affected? A drop concentrated in a specific topic cluster suggests intent or content quality issues in that cluster. A drop spread across unrelated keywords suggests something more structural.
  • What is the nature of the drop? Did position change, or did traffic change while position stayed the same? (Review the GSC Performance report filtering by impressions versus clicks separately.)
  • Did the drop align with a known algorithm update? Cross-reference the timing against the update dates in Step 3.
  • Did the SERP itself change? Search your target keywords manually and look for new features that may have appeared above your result.
  • How are competitors performing? Did the sites that gained your positions improve, or did you simply lose ground without an obvious winner?
  • What does keyword history show? Is this a one-time drop or a gradual decline over weeks or months?
  • Did anything unusual happen on the site around the time the drop started?

One important rule to follow: do not make changes until you have identified the cause. Fixing the wrong thing adds noise to the diagnostic process and can make the situation harder to read.

Step 2: Check Google Search Console for Manual Actions

I want to address this early: manual penalties are less common than most site owners fear. A manual action requires a human reviewer at Google to flag your site specifically, it is not something that happens automatically during algorithm updates. When Google issues a manual action, they always notify you in Google Search Console. If GSC does not show a manual action notification, you do not have a manual penalty.

To check: in Google Search Console, navigate to Security and Manual Actions in the left navigation, then select Manual Actions. If the screen shows “No issues detected,” you can rule out a manual penalty and move on. If an action is shown, note the specific type before doing anything else.

Historical Context: Panda and Penguin

You will still encounter references to Google Panda and Google Penguin when researching ranking drops. Panda (launched February 2011) targeted low-quality, thin, or duplicate content. Penguin (launched April 2012) targeted manipulative link building. Both are historically significant because they represented Google’s first major systematic enforcement actions against common black-hat SEO practices.

In current SEO, Panda and Penguin are not separate systems, they have been fully integrated into Google’s core ranking algorithm. A site affected by what would historically have been a Panda issue (thin content, poor E-E-A-T) will see this reflected in core update performance, not a separate Panda notification. The same is true for Penguin-type link quality signals. I mention them because the terminology persists, not because they require separate diagnostic treatment in 2025-2026.

What Triggers Manual Actions

If a manual action is found, the most common triggers are:

Invisible text or keyword stuffing. Text hidden by matching font colour to background, or placed off-screen using CSS, to include keywords that users cannot see but Google can crawl. Fix: remove the hidden text. Submit a reconsideration request after demonstrating the fix.

Cloaking. Serving different content to Googlebot versus human users, for example, showing a clean content page to Google while serving users a redirect to a product page. Fix: ensure Google and users see the same content. Use the URL Inspection tool to compare the crawled page with what users see.

Sneaky redirects. Redirecting users to a different page than the one Google has indexed, typically to a page with more commercial or spammy content. Fix: remove the redirect or align the destination with the indexed content.

After fixing the underlying issue: use the Request Review button in the Manual Actions report to submit a reconsideration request. Google’s response typically arrives within a few weeks. The review will confirm whether the issue has been resolved and, if so, when the manual action will be lifted.

Step 3: Check for Recent Website Changes

The most common cause of a sudden ranking drop is something that changed on the site itself. I check this before anything else because it is both the most frequent culprit and the fastest to resolve. Check your own site before assuming it is an external cause.

Indexing Configuration

The most catastrophic and most easily missed technical error: confirming that Google can actually index your pages. A single misconfigured noindex tag on a template can remove hundreds of pages from Google’s index overnight. A robots.txt disallow rule can block an entire site section. A canonical tag pointing to a different URL can silently deprioritise the page you intended to rank.

Use the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console on your most important affected pages and confirm the “Allow indexing” and “Canonical” fields show what you expect. Also check whether anyone used GSC’s Temporary Removal tool to hide pages, which is sometimes done by developers and forgotten. If your staging environment or development version was recently crawled or made accessible, check whether it is inadvertently blocking production URLs.

JavaScript Issues

If your site renders significant content or internal links via JavaScript, Googlebot may not be processing it correctly. Google renders JavaScript in a separate, deferred crawl queue, meaning there can be a gap between when a page is first crawled and when the JavaScript-rendered content is actually seen. If your recent site changes added JavaScript-dependent navigation, content, or internal links, this is worth auditing.

Specifically: if your internal links are only accessible via JavaScript menus, Googlebot may not follow them. If core page content is rendered client-side, it may not appear in the cached version of the page. The recommended approach is server-side rendering (SSR) for any content you need Google to read reliably. Use the “View Page Source” test, content visible in source but not in the rendered view is fine for SEO; content absent from source but present only after JavaScript executes is at risk of being missed.

Redirects, HTTP Status Errors, and Hreflang

Broken redirects, redirect chains, and pages returning 4xx or 5xx errors are a common but less obvious cause of ranking drops after technical changes. If your site recently underwent a platform migration, URL restructure, or hosting move, check the GSC Coverage report for errors and “Submitted URL returned redirect” warnings. Redirect chains of three or more hops can dilute link equity and cause crawl inefficiency. Pages returning 404 or 503 errors that previously ranked may simply drop from the index.

For multilingual or international sites: if hreflang tags were recently updated or accidentally corrupted, this can cause Google to serve the wrong language version in the wrong country, creating a sudden drop in a specific region without any content changing.

Step 4: Check for a Google Algorithm Update

Algorithm updates are one of the most frequent causes of ranking drops, and diagnosing the type correctly determines the right recovery approach. There are two fundamentally different types of update:

Core updates are broad re-assessments of content quality and relevance across the web. They do not target spam or policy violations, they recalibrate how Google weights signals like E-E-A-T, topical authority, content comprehensiveness, and user satisfaction. If your site is affected by a core update, the recovery path involves demonstrating better quality, not fixing a rules violation.

Spam updates enforce Google’s spam policies more aggressively. They target manipulative link profiles, thin or auto-generated content, cloaking, and similar practices. If your site is affected by a spam update, the recovery path involves identifying and remedying the specific issue being flagged.

Confirmed 2025 Google Algorithm Updates

Fast Diagnostic: Matching Your Drop to the Right Update Type

If your drop aligns with March, June, or December 2025 dates, treat it as a core re-ranking event. The appropriate response is a content quality review, not a spam audit. Core updates do not reward “fixing” an error, they reward demonstrating better quality, more depth, and stronger E-E-A-T signals over time. Recovery typically requires waiting for the next core update after genuine improvements have been made.

If your drop aligns with late August through September 2025 dates, treat it as a spam policy enforcement event. The appropriate response is to identify the specific spam signal being targeted: manipulative links, scaled auto-generated content, cloaking, or thin affiliate pages. This is diagnosable and addressable, but requires honesty about what is in the link profile or content set.

If your drop does not align with any of the four 2025 update windows, it is likely the result of ongoing ranking volatility, a site-level technical issue (see Step 2), or gradual competitive displacement (see Step 7) rather than a specific update event.

A Brief History of Significant Updates

For context: Google’s algorithm has always been in flux, but certain updates represented step-changes in how quality was evaluated. BERT (2019) dramatically improved Google’s ability to understand natural language and query intent. The Core Web Vitals update (2021) made page experience a ranking factor. Product Reviews updates (2021 onwards) improved Google’s ability to identify shallow affiliate content. Passage Ranking (2021) allowed Google to rank specific sections of long-form content independently. These changes accumulated the quality standard that current updates continue to refine.

Step 5: Check for Negative SEO and Backlink Issues

Spammy Link Attacks

Negative SEO via spammy link building, where a bad actor points large volumes of low-quality or explicitly harmful links at your site, is the most discussed form of external ranking interference. The scenario is simple: a competitor or malicious actor builds thousands of links from link farms, adult sites, or casino directories pointing at your domain, hoping to trigger a spam signal.

Discovery: monitor your backlink profile regularly using Ahrefs, Semrush, or the Links report in Google Search Console. A sudden spike in referring domains, particularly from unrelated or clearly low-quality sources, is the key signal to look for.

Response: here I need to add an important caution that many guides miss. The disavow tool should be used carefully. Most low-quality links are naturally ignored by Google and do not need to be disavowed, Google is much better at discounting junk links than it was in 2012. Over-disavowing can actually hurt your rankings if you accidentally disavow legitimate links caught in a broad domain-level disavow file. Reserve the disavow tool for clear patterns of malicious, coordinated spammy link attacks where the volume and profile of harmful links is unambiguous and significant. When in doubt, do not disavow.

Website Hacking

A hacked site can cause rankings to collapse quickly, and it is more common than most business owners expect. Hackers often inject spam content, create new pages, or redirect users to malicious destinations, all of which Google will penalise when discovered. The signs are not always obvious from the front end, which is why this needs to be part of the diagnostic process.

Discovery: run a site: search in Google (type site:yourdomain.com) and scan the results for any pages or content you do not recognise. Check the GSC Coverage report for any sudden spike in indexed pages. If you suspect a hack, use GSC’s Security Issues report, Google will flag known hacking patterns here.

Response: engage a cybersecurity professional or your hosting provider to identify and remove the malicious code. After the site is clean, use GSC’s Temporary Removal tool to prevent Google from continuing to index the compromised pages while the cleanup is in progress. Submit for reinclusion once the site is confirmed clean.

Lost Backlinks

Legitimate, high-quality backlinks can disappear for reasons beyond your control: the linking site shuts down, a page is removed, a link is updated to point elsewhere. A gradual loss of strong referring domains will cause gradual ranking decline, even if nothing else on the site changes.

Monitor your backlink profile with Ahrefs or Semrush. The “Lost Backlinks” report in both tools shows links that no longer point to your site. For high-value lost links, particularly those from authoritative, relevant domains, it is worth reaching out to the linking site to understand whether reinstatement is possible, or whether the linking page has moved to a new URL where a link could be re-established.

Step 6: Check for Search Intent or SERP Layout Changes

This step catches drops that have nothing to do with your site’s quality, your backlinks, or any penalty, but are nonetheless real and require a response. I have seen more of these in the past two years than at any point in my career, as Google has added significant new SERP features and changed how it interprets certain query categories.

Search Intent Shifts

Google’s interpretation of a keyword can change meaningfully over time. A query that previously returned e-commerce category pages may now return informational guides. A query that previously returned blog posts may now show video results. When this happens, a page can lose its ranking through no fault of its own, it is simply no longer the type of content Google believes the query warrants.

Case Study 4 in the section below is a direct real-world example of this: a client in the TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) sector held the number-one position for their primary keyword until Google shifted its interpretation of the query from showing e-commerce results to showing informational content. The product page, which had been ranking well, was no longer the right content format for the intent Google had identified. The recovery required a content strategy adjustment, not a technical fix.

SERP Layout Changes

New SERP features can push organic results lower on the page without any change to the rankings themselves. Featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, local packs, image carousels, video results, and AI Overviews all occupy space that previously belonged to the first few organic blue links. A site that was receiving 400 clicks per month from position three may see that fall to 200 clicks if a featured snippet and a PAA block now appear above it, even if the site still ranks in position three.

This is the position-drop versus traffic-drop distinction from the introduction. Check Google Search Console’s Performance report: filter by the specific URL and keyword, and compare impressions alongside clicks. If impressions are stable (Google is still showing your page) but clicks have fallen, the issue is SERP layout, not ranking.

How to Diagnose

Search your target keywords manually in an incognito browser window and examine the full SERP. Compare what you see now against historical SERP screenshots if available, or use a tool like SEMrush’s SERP feature history to track what features have appeared for your keywords over time. Note any new features that appeared above your result and estimate how much real estate they are consuming.

Recovery

If search intent shifted, a content strategy adjustment is needed. Review the pages that now rank above yours, identify the content format Google is currently rewarding (guide, video, product page, comparison), and consider whether creating or adapting content to match that format is appropriate for your business. If the issue is new SERP features, consider optimising for those features specifically: structured FAQ content for People Also Ask positions, clear definitions and concise answers for featured snippets, and local business schema for local pack eligibility.

Step 7: Check Competitor Movements

Rankings are relative. Your page does not just need to be good, it needs to be better than the alternatives Google has available for that query. If a competitor has significantly improved their content, earned better links, or matched search intent more accurately, your rankings can decline even if nothing on your site has changed. This is the most frequently overlooked cause of gradual ranking decline.

How to Identify Who Gained Your Lost Positions

The fastest method is to search your target keywords directly and look at who is now occupying the positions you previously held. In Ahrefs or Semrush, you can run a Position History report for specific keywords and see exactly which URLs moved up when yours moved down. This tells you not just that you lost ground but who specifically gained it, which is the starting point for understanding why.

What to Investigate

Once you know which competitors gained positions, review their pages critically: did they publish more comprehensive or better-structured content? Earn links from higher-authority or more relevant domains? Win featured snippets by adding clear question-and-answer formatting? Improve page speed or mobile experience? Match the current search intent more accurately than your content does? Each of these is a specific, addressable gap.

Gradual vs Sudden Drops

If your rankings slipped slowly over weeks or months rather than dropping sharply overnight, competitor improvement is more often the primary cause than a penalty or algorithm update. Penalties and algorithm updates tend to produce sharp, dated drops. Competitive displacement tends to produce a slow erosion that only becomes obvious in hindsight when you look at a three-to-six-month chart.

Competitive Intelligence

I find it useful to reframe competitor analysis as intelligence rather than as a problem. If a competitor outranked you, they have shown you what is working in your market right now. Their page is a template for what Google is currently rewarding in your category. Analysing it methodically gives you a clear roadmap for what to match or exceed to regain positions, that is more actionable than any audit report.

What the Google API Leak Tells Us About Ranking Drops

The insights from the 2024 Google Content Warehouse API leak remain some of the most informative signals we have about how Google’s algorithm actually works. What follows is my analysis of those signals, treat this as evergreen practitioner context rather than breaking news, because the underlying mechanisms revealed have not changed.

User Interaction Signals Matter

User interactions, such as clicks, dwell time, and engagement metrics, significantly impact Google’s ranking algorithms. While traditionally downplayed, the leak confirmed that Google collects significant levels of data on user interactions on a website. On hindsight, this makes perfect sense as Google went as far to develop Google Chrome back in the day, and this could well be the benefit of having their own browser. This insight highlights the importance of understanding how users interact with your website and the role these interactions play in influencing your search rankings.

Combining insights from the Google Algorithm Leak with the “Honeymoon Effect” (discussed later in this article), highlights the critical importance of intentional user interaction design when launching a major content revamp or design change. The “Honeymoon Effect” refers to the phenomenon where Google temporarily boosts a newly updated page in search rankings to assess its performance. However, this boost is short-lived if the page fails to meet user interaction expectations.

If users do not engage with the content, experience poor load times, or encounter a non-mobile-friendly design, the initial ranking surge will quickly diminish. Therefore, SEOs must meticulously plan and execute user interaction strategies to ensure that enhancements in content and design genuinely resonate with users. This involves optimizsng page load speeds, ensuring that the top 30% of the page has engaging rich media content, and ensuring a seamless user experience across all devices.

Site Authority and Domain Signals Exist

Despite Google’s repeated public assertions that they do not use “domain authority” in their ranking algorithms, the Google Algorithm Leak has revealed otherwise. Internal documentation indicates that site-wide authority metrics, such as “siteAuthority” and “homepage PageRank,” are indeed utilised to influence rankings.

In particular, homepage PageRank is of interest since it suggests that Google treats the homepage differently and is the most critical page. Going into details, Homepage PageRank is used as a proxy for assessing the value of new pages until they accumulate their own PageRank. Essentially, a high Homepage PageRank can boost the initial performance of newly published or updated pages, helping them rank better in search results from the outset.

Since the homepage typically receives the most backlinks and traffic, it often holds the highest PageRank within the site. This PageRank is then distributed to other pages through internal linking, helping to elevate the entire site’s standing in Google’s eyes. By maintaining a strong and authoritative homepage, websites can enhance their overall SEO effectiveness, ensuring that even their deeper, less frequently visited pages benefit from the authority conferred by the homepage. This interconnectedness underscores the importance of strategic internal linking and consistent content quality across all sections of a website.

Inferring from this, if your website has widespread rank drops, a good bet would be to start investigating from your home page. There is a good chance that Google has lost trust in your home page for a variety of reasons.

Meanwhile, the siteAuthority metric is likely derived from a combination of factors, including the quality and quantity of inbound links, the overall content quality across the site, and user engagement metrics. The existence of these metrics means that Google evaluates not just individual pages but also the broader reputation and reliability of the entire domain.

Click-Based Ranking Adjustments

Despite Google’s public statements downplaying the role of click data in their ranking algorithms, the leaked documentation reveals that systems like NavBoost utilise click metrics to adjust rankings based on user behaviour. This system tracks various click-related signals, including the number of clicks a result receives, the duration of these clicks (indicating dwell time), and patterns of click behaviour over time.

This insight confirms that user engagement metrics directly impact a page’s search performance. If a page attracts clicks and holds user attention, it signals to Google that the content is relevant and valuable, leading to higher rankings. Conversely, if a page experiences high bounce rates or short dwell times, it can be demoted in search results.

Based on this, you should carefully observe both click through rates on Google Search Console as well as the duration of time that users spend on your website. They each tell Google if users are interested to firstly discover your website, and secondly if they do, if it was a relevant experience for them.

How Fresh Content And Updates Are Derived

According to the leaked documentation, Google employs several attributes to determine the freshness of content, including “bylineDate,” “syntacticDate,” and “semanticDate.”

The “bylineDate” refers to the explicit date provided by the content creator, often visible on articles and blog posts. This date is crucial as it indicates to Google when the content was published or last updated, helping the algorithm prioritize recent information in search results.

The “syntacticDate” is extracted from the URL or title of the document, providing another layer of data to verify the recency of the content.

Additionally, the “semanticDate” is derived from the content itself, using natural language processing to understand and timestamp the information presented in the document.

Since Google places significant emphasis on the freshness of content, if any of the 3 above date metrics indicate that your content is stale and no longer relevant, then expect ranking drops for the article.

Recognising Authors And Expertise

The leaked documentation confirms that Google explicitly stores information about document authors as text attributes. This means that the credentials, reputation, and authority of the individuals creating content are systematically assessed. Google’s system identifies the authors of documents and evaluates their credibility, which can significantly impact how well the content performs in search rankings. This focus aligns with the broader E-E-A-T (Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) guidelines, emphasising that content produced by recognised experts is more likely to be trusted and thus rank higher.

Key insights from this include the necessary use of clear author entities on your website. If your website is in the YMYL niche, and is losing to the competition, do relook at your author profiles. Ensure that there is consistent naming and context surrounding them on all parts of your website.

Anchor Link Mismatches

Anchor link mismatches occur when the text used in a hyperlink (anchor text) does not accurately reflect the content of the linked page. The leaked Google documentation highlights that such mismatches are recognised and penalised by Google’s ranking algorithms. When the anchor text fails to provide a relevant description of the destination page, it signals to Google that the link may be misleading or irrelevant. This can result in the linked page being demoted in search rankings as Google aims to prioritise user-friendly, relevant, and trustworthy content.

Link Analysis

According to the leaked Google documentation, the search engine employs a sophisticated system to evaluate the quality and relevance of links.

This system includes metrics such as “sourceType,” which categorises the quality of the page from which a link originates, and “phraseAnchorSpamDays,” which tracks the frequency and velocity of link creation to identify potential spam.

Based on the 2 metrics above, I would caution SEOs on the relevancy of the niche for linking websites as well as the velocity of their link building efforts.

Understanding the Honeymoon Effect in SEO

New websites or freshly published pages often experience what’s known as the ‘Honeymoon Effect’ in Google’s rankings. This phenomenon can be both intriguing and misleading for webmasters and SEO professionals.

What Happens: When new pages or sites are launched, Google sometimes initially ranks them higher in the search results. This temporary boost is believed to be Google’s way of collecting more user data on the new content.

Subsequent Adjustment: After this brief period, you’ll typically see these rankings adjust downward, stabilising to positions more reflective of their actual SEO value. This adjustment is a normal part of the ranking process as Google gains a better understanding of where the page or site fits within the broader web ecosystem.

No Cause for Alarm: If you observe this pattern with your new website or pages, don’t be alarmed. It’s a fairly common occurrence and part of Google’s process to assess new content. The key is to continue focusing on SEO best practices, such as creating high-quality content, ensuring good user experience, and building a healthy backlink profile. These efforts will help your site find its rightful place in the search rankings over time, beyond the initial fluctuations of the ‘Honeymoon Effect’.
