Meta tags get your website up there

 Importance of Meta Tag Banner

Are you offering a service to your local area, or selling products to an international audience? No matter your business, it’s important to have quality meta tags. Scrap that – it’s an absolute necessity, if you want to rank well on the Google search engine, that is.

Creating proper meta tags costs you almost no time at all, and doing so gives you the force you need to increase your page’s organic ranking. This is what we call ‘optimisation’. In fact, optimising your page titles and meta descriptions may well be the lowest hanging fruit you can tackle if we’re talking about website search engine optimisation. This basic SEO effort will provide a clear description of your products and services, raise your click-through rate (CTR), and enhance your on-page SEO.

But what are meta tags exactly?

Meta tag Image

We all know that the digital world is a complex one, with constant updates and algorithm tweaks. If you haven’t had the chance to deal with website building and SEO, there’s no reason why you would know what meta tags are. And there’s nothing wrong with that – it’s probably why you’re on this page in the first place.

In essence, meta tags are the little snippets of code that help describe a web page to search engines. They don't show up on the page itself, but they provide important information about the content of the page. Think of them like the back cover of a book. They give you a little bit of information about what the book is about, who wrote it, and so on. But they don't give away the whole story.

When optimising the pages on a website to rank better in Google SERP, there are two main meta tags you should be aware of: title tags and meta descriptions. Try experimenting with our simulator tool above!

What are title tags and why are they so important?

Title Tag Example
SERP Title Example

Think of title tags as the "headline" for your web page. Just like a headline in a newspaper article, your title tag should be interesting and informative, so that people will want to click on it.

Your title tag should also be relevant to the content on your web page. If your web page is about "dogs," then your title tag should mention dogs somewhere. This will help Google understand what your web page is about, and it will also help people who are searching for information about dogs.

On top of just appearing as attention-grabbing blue text on the search results – like the ones you see in our simulator, your title tag will also be shown on the page’s tab, as well as when your link is shared on social media platforms.

Of course, there’s a lot more that goes into creating high-quality title tags. And our experts are really good at it.

Best practices when writing title tags

When it comes to title tags, there are a few things you should keep in mind if you want to write effective ones. Here are some best practices to follow:

Keep it short and sweet – somewhat

For title tags, the best practice is to keep them short and sweet. Why? Because long titles tend to get cut off in search results, and you want potential visitors to be able to see your full title so they know what your page is about. So stick to around 50 to 60 characters for your title tags, and you'll be in good shape.

Coax, not SCREAM

While using all caps may seem like an easy way to make your titles stand out, it's actually a major no-no in the world of SEO. That's because search engines view all caps as being equivalent to shouting, and they will likely penalise your pages for it. The best way is to either use sentence case (First letter capitalised), or title case (All Main Words Capitalised).

Write for humans, not robots

Keyword stuffing used to work in the past, but doing so today will likely turn your audience off. Because your title tag is often the first thing people see when they’re considering clicking on a result, it’s important to make sure they are well written and engaging. Of course, you want to include keywords in your title tags, but don't stuff them in there just for the sake of it. Use them strategically, and make sure they flow naturally with the rest of your title.

Make it unique

Your title tag is your chance to make a good first impression. So make it count! Write something that's compelling and will make people want to click on your result. It's important to write unique title tags because it helps your website stand out from the rest. It also helps you attract more visitors to your site, and makes it easier for them to find what they're looking for.

What are meta descriptions and why are they so important?

Meta description tag example
Meta description SERP example

A meta description is a short summary of what a web page is about. It is usually displayed in the SERPs under the title of the page. The meta description helps searchers understand what the page is about and decide whether to click through to it.

Even though your meta description is not a ranking factor for Google, it is still important because it can influence a searcher's decision to click on your result. And while you may think it’s a good idea and an opportunity to stuff keywords into the 156-character limit, this can be counterproductive as Google may penalise you for it.

So should you still focus on creating good meta descriptions? Definitely – you’ll see the difference when you try it out on our search simulator tool.

Best practices when writing meta descriptions

We’ve covered the importance of having a top-quality meta description – so, let’s get down to the actual writing. Before you go ahead, here are some tips for you:

Don’t ramble on

The reality is that less is often more when it comes to your meta description. In fact, if you have too much text in your meta description, it can actually hurt your website's ranking. That's because Google will only display the first 156 characters of your meta description in its search results. So if you have a long, detailed meta description, chances are that potential customers will only see the beginning of it.

Use our Google SERP simulator tool to preview how your meta description will look across desktop and mobile before loading them in!

Weave in some keywords

If you're not weaving in keywords into your meta descriptions, you're missing out on a valuable opportunity to optimise your website for search engines. By including relevant keywords, you can help ensure that your website appears higher in search results, which can drive more traffic to your site.

A pro tip is to focus on relevancy rather than density – avoid overstuffing your meta description with too many keywords.

Stand out from the crowd

Your meta description should be unique. This means that it should be different from the descriptions of any other page on the internet. Not only will this help your page stand out in search results, but it will also help to attract clicks from potential visitors. On top of that, your meta description should also be interesting and informative.

After all, this is what will convince someone to click on your page over another.

FAQs about Google SERP best practices

A SERP in Google is a search engine results page. This is the page that you see when you type in a query into the search engine. The results that are displayed on the SERP are known as search results, and they can be in the form of both organic and paid listings.

There are many reasons why you should optimise your website for Google SERP. Perhaps the most obvious reason is that it can help you to attract more visitors to your site. If your site appears higher up in the search results, then people are more likely to click on it. This can lead to an increase in traffic and, ultimately, more customers or clients.

You can also combine various marketing strategies, such as running Google ads or executing link building campaigns, to further boost your website performance.

Not ranking on Google? Here are a number of things you can do to improve your SERP:

  1. Make sure your website is well-optimised for search engines. This means doing things like using the right keyword density, having well-written and keyword-rich titles and descriptions, and having a sitemap.
  2. Promote your website through social media and other online channels. The more people who know about your website, the more likely they are to visit it.
  3. Make sure your website’s content is high quality and informative. People are more likely to visit websites that offer valuable, relevant information.
  4. Make sure your website loads quickly. Nobody likes to wait around for a slow website to load.
  5. Keep your website updated with fresh content. Search engines love websites that are constantly being updated with new, relevant information.

At the very least, you should make sure your meta tags are well structured. You can use the simulator to preview them.

A meta description is a short description of a web page’s content. Meta descriptions are typically used by search engines to display results when someone searches for a particular keyword or phrase.

While meta descriptions are not necessarily a ranking factor, they can influence click-through rate (CTR). A well-written meta description can entice users to click on your result, which can ultimately lead to more traffic to your website.

Your meta description is the short piece of text that appears beneath your page’s title in Google’s search engine results pages (SERPs). It’s your chance to grab the searcher’s attention and convince them to click through to your page.

So, how do you write a good meta description? Here are some tips:

  • Keep it under 156 characters
  • Make it relevant to the page’s content
  • Use strong keywords
  • Write in a natural, engaging way
  • Include a call to action

By following these tips, you can write meta descriptions that will help your pages stand out in the SERPs and attract clicks from searchers. Try filling in some meta description examples in our simulator tool above!

A title tag is an HTML element that specifies the title of a web page. Title tags are displayed in the browser tab and are also used by search engines to determine the content of a page.

A title tag should be unique to each page on your website and should accurately describe the content of that page.Title tags are a critical part of on-page optimisation and can help improve your click-through rate from SERPs.

In order to write a good title tag, you will need to consider the following:

  • The length of your title tag
  • The relevance of your title tag
  • The uniqueness of your title tag

When it comes to the length of your title tag, you want to make sure that it is no longer than 60 characters. This is because anything beyond that will be truncated in the SERPs. As for the relevance of your title tag, you want to make sure that it accurately reflects the topic of your web page, and remember to include the location if you’re targeting a local audience. For example, adding a ‘Singapore’ can increase the relevancy of your page if your customers reside in Singapore. Finally, when it comes to the uniqueness of your title tag, you want to make sure that it is not used on any other web page.

A good rule of thumb is to keep your title tags to 60 characters or less, including spaces. This will ensure that your titles are readable and clickable in search results. As for meta descriptions, make them concise and to the point, using keywords and phrases that accurately reflect the page content, and keeping it under 160 characters. By following these tips, you can improve your click-through rates in search results.

A Google SERP simulator is a tool that allows you to see how your website would look like on Google’s search engine results pages (SERPs). This can be useful for optimising your website for better visibility in search results.

You don’t have to go far to find one. At First Page, you’ll find a range of useful Search Engine Optimization (SEO) tools – including a Google SERP simulator – to help you structure and optimise your website. To use it, simply input your content into the tool. Ta-da! The simulator will then show you the title tag, URL, and meta description as you type them out.

Keep in mind that such search simulators are just tools and should not be relied upon for 100% accurate results. However, they can give you a good idea of how well your website is currently optimised for Google’s search algorithm.

If this all sounds confusing to you, why not contact our SEO experts to get you on your way?
